Understanding mental health, mental ill-health and suicide

To progress collective action in mental health, we need to first have a shared understanding about key concepts and a shared language that can engage all sectors.

A focus on mental health and suicide prevention is a national priority that requires coordinated action across governments, services and communities. This can only occur where there is a shared understanding about key concepts and a shared language that can engage all sectors.

To reduce suicide rates in Australia and improve mental health and wellbeing, there needs to be a broader and clearer understanding of the factors that contribute to distress, informed by lived and living experience knowledge. To have the greatest impact, our policies and funding must support action to occur where people live, work, learn and connect with others.
