About Dr Thienel

Dr Renate Thienel joined Everymind in August 2015. Holding a B.A. (Hons), M.Psych. (Research) and a PhD (Science, Dr. rer. nat.), Renate is an experienced researcher with expertise in mental health related research project planning, implementation, evaluation and dissemination.

Renate’s current H Index is 14, with 24 peer-reviewed journal articles, 5 book chapters and 728 citations (google scholar; research gate). Renate holds conjoint appointments with the School of Psychology, at the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute, Priority Research Centre of Brain and Mental Health.

Renate works within the Institute’s Mental Health and Research team across several research projects into mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention. A recent project assessed journalists’ adherence to evidence-based recommendations of reporting suicide, provided under the Mindframe National Media Initiative (Thienel et al., 2016). In the future Renate would like to help develop recommendations on how to improve mental health, reduce mental illness and enhance and fasten the uptake of help-seeking.

Working with the Institute is literally meaningful, which makes work very rewarding. Some of Renate’s career highlights besides working across suicide prevention and mental health promotion include several studies into neurocognitive parameters of schizophrenia such as profiling at-risk mental states.
