Everymind’s Life in Mind team today hosts the inaugural meeting of the national Communications Champions Group in Newcastle.
Boasting some of Australia’s leaders in suicide prevention, the group will provide guidance across sectors and communities on the values and commitment to safe and effective communication about suicide.
Members range from leading national and regional suicide prevention organisations, to lived experience representatives, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) communities, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) groups and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The aim of the group is to support the operationalisation of the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Communications Charter (the Charter), which was originally developed by the National Mental Health Commission in 2012/3.
Life in Mind Project Lead Melinda Benson said the Champions Group meeting was a great opportunity to draw on mental health and suicide prevention experience from around the country.
“Our Champions have key knowledge in a number of areas, including regional communities, lived experience, workplaces and community campaigns."
“The group will also give us insight into how to better reach our priority populations, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young people, rural communities, diverse cultures and LGBTI communities.”
The Charter and Champions Group are funded by the Australian Department of Health, under Activity 4 – the National Media and Communications Strategies, National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program. The Life in Mind team is also working closely with our Mindframe initiative, in education and training for responsible mass communication around suicide and mental illness.
The Champions Group will also guide the development of a new Life in Mind online portal to catalogue and connect services and communities. Watch this space in early 2018 for more details!
